Invitation to St Luke's Snowsports 2019

Kindergarten -  Year 12

St Luke’s Grammar School has had a long tradition of involvement in NSW Interschools Snowsports. The program aims to improve the skiing and boarding of our students, foster a spirit of teamwork, develop a sense of community and to have fun. Students do not need to be experts to participate, but a sense of fun and adventure is required.

The NSW Interschools Competition is a team-based event (where individuals can also participate) which focuses on fun and participation. Click here for information about Interschools including the 2019 Championship dates.

St Luke’s Family Fun Weekend - Saturday 6 - Sunday 7 July 2019
This year we have the added option of spending some time with the Snowsports families at our Family Fun Weekend. This weekend will be an opportunity to meet up with families from St Luke’s and have a look at what Interschools is all about, without the need to compete. It aims to give students an opportunity to spend some time skiing with their friends while having a great deal of fun. For those that are competing in the following week, this weekend will also give an opportunity to spend some time on snow as a team.

Below is an outline of the weekend. The details will be finalised once we have an idea of how many wish to participate.

Interschools Information
Interschools provides students from Kindergarten to Year 12 with the opportunity to compete at a Regional Level in the NSW Northern Interschool Ski Championships.

The Championships alternate each year between Thredbo and Perisher in the July School holidays. The 2019 Competition will be held in Perisher from Tuesday 9 July - Saturday 13 July. Students can compete in Skier X, Alpine Ski, Snowboard X, Snowboard GS and Moguls during the event.  For a detailed description of these events please click on this link https://vimeo.com/88239868

Teams and Individuals compete in their school divisions: Division 1 (Years 11 & 12), Division 2 (Years 9 & 10), Division 3 (Years 7 & 8), Division 4 (Years 5 & 6), Division 5 (Years 4 & 3), Division 6 (Kindergarten to Year 2 Alpine and Skiercross). Please note that Divisions will be allocated according to Year Group, however, if this is changed in order to form a team, this will be discussed with parents / carers.

While students enter as individual competitors, where there are enough students they will join together to form a team. It is the teams that earn points for the school and contribute to the Schools Trophies. If the students finish in the top 10 individually or top 5 team places they are eligible to compete in the State Championships in late August. The National Championships alternate between NSW and Victorian ski fields in early September.

Entry cost into Interschools is a once only mandatory yearly $40 registration fee and $47 per event entered.  if you wish your son/daughter to participate in the Northern NSW Championships please click here.  Payments due by 31 May 2019.
Training Options
This year we are trying to encourage students to join together to participate in some race training and develop a real sense of St Luke’s as a team. This is the most difficult part of the program to organise and the full cost will not be known until we know how many students wish to take part. Some families organise their own training for their children and this is still acceptable.

To give an idea of costs, a ½ day Private Lesson costs approximately $400 and a full day approximately $800. Divided by 4 students, this can be quite economical. Due to Interschools happening in Perisher this year, it would anticipate that most lessons would occur there. However, if there is enough interest we can also organise lessons at Thredbo.

Visit Trybooking to view the proposed dates and to complete the booking form. Please note, due to lessons booking out early, deposits are due by 21 March 2019.

Uniform
The St Luke's Snowsports uniform currently consists of the new St Luke's Ski Jacket. To order the new St Luke's Ski Jacket, please contact the Uniform Shop: We are also looking at the option of a St Luke’s Helmet cover, these will be available for purchase when they arrive in to the uniform shop.

What families need to organise...
Due to the nature of the this activity and the distance from Sydney the Snowsports Program at St Luke’s relies on family support to ensure its success. As such families are responsible for Transport, Accomodation, Ski Gear and Lift Tickets. If you need any information or suggestions with this please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Craig Baker (Director of Sport) or Mr Scott Bedingfield (Deputy Principal) for advice.

Parent Volunteers:
Parents may be asked to volunteer for specific duties throughout the Competition. All volunteers at events are entitled to a discounted lift ticket for that day.

St Luke’s coordinates entry into events, coordination of families (including where people need to be and when) and lessons if required. We will also keep you up to date with other events that come up and keep you in contact with each other.
