Change is the Only Certainty, Nevertheless Optimism
Year of the Rat
Upcoming Events in Seattle, Cairo, Charleston, Montana, Big Sur

Dear Ones,

As we move into a new year, be aware that we are also moving into a crucial new decade that is politically fraught now. In the face of bad news, I wonder why I still am optimistic. “This too shall pass.” is a truism, but whether it will get better or get worse is however, not in the saying. The wisdom of the I Ching  (“The Book of Changes,” emphasizes is that Change is the only certainty.  My personal astrological reading regards the upcoming year as auspiciously positive (I think of this as a weather report), which helps.  We have begun the year 2020 which is a reminder of 20-20 vision, the ability to see clearly.  Women are rising as the climate is changing. We are on a threshold in which survival of the planet as we know it is precarious. The fate of the beauty and life on Earth depends on the outcome between the rise of feminism and ecological activism vs. patriarchy and disregard of climate change. This is a liminal time, when what we do now affects what will come next. The unit of change is a circle with a sacred center, through circles critical mass and tipping point can be reached. This upcoming year is a time for activism with heart, we could be initiating an era of Artemis.
In the Chinese Zodiac (a twelve year repeating cycle of animal symbols), we just entered the Year of the Rat, the first sign of the Zodiac: “Creative problem solver, imaginative, inquisitive, hyperactive worker, respected for its resourcefulness, intuitive, ability to acquire and hold on to things it values. (Those born in 1924,1936, 1948, 1960,1972,1984, 1996, 2008, 2020) Following the Lunar Calendar, the Year of the Rat began on January 25.

Saturday banquet keynote: Jean Shinoda Bolen M.D.
On the Threshold of the Age of Artemis
The day after the Trump inauguration, women's marches "happened"-they rose as an idea that went viral on the internet, and word of it moved us to go. It felt like a calling for Jean to board a plane for Washington DC, as others did in cities and towns across the United States, soon after the "me-too" movement and the numbers of women running for office. Like waves that arise deep in the ocean and gain momentum until they rise as huge waves when they reach shore, so has it been for waves of feminism. The first wave was the Women's suffrage movement, which began with five women sitting around a table organizing a women's conference in Seneca Falls in 1848.
After years of perseverance, organizing, ridicule and jailing, women finally got the right to vote, with the final state ratifying the 19th amendment in 1920. The next wave began toward the end of the 1960s, with Consciousness Raising groups and conferences, making 1970s the decade of women and the rise of feminism, including the first UN World Conferences on Women in 1975. The 1980s saw a rise of women's spirituality in California through two significant conferences, the rise of ritual, of circles, and the return of the goddess as archetypes (Goddesses in Everywoman) and as the Divine Feminine. We are in a liminal time, on the threshold of the rise of the sisterhood of the divine daughter, the Age of Artemis.

WEF-5WCW-Mission Million-India 2022

This string of letters, acronyms, words and 2022—is a like reading a hieroglyphic, condensing intention and vision (WEF.in.org)
Women Economic Forum is carrying the vision of a 5th World Conference on Women forward (5wcw.org). The 4th UN Women’s conference was held twenty-five years ago  Beijing (1995). The conveners of the Millionth Circle began advocating for a 5WCW in 2002, but even with the support of the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, and the President of the General Assembly, a resolution to hold a UN 5WCW could not gain necessary support. After close to 20 years of effort, “the era of UN Women’s Conference is over.”  Rising in its place, WEF-5WCW-Mission Million-India 2022. A million participants, linked with circles and organizations via internet communications, bringing entrepreneurial women leaders together with NGO leaders in mutual sisterhood at the beginning of this crucial decade for the planet and humanity.
WEF-Egypt (March 4 -9, 2020)
I’ll be in Cairo to attend the WEF-Egypt Conference where I’ll receive a Distinguished Woman of the Decade award, attending with my daughter Melody who has an MSW, worked in NGOs and started one for young women in Santa Fe, NM, and now has a national position of leadership within a major healthcare corporation.
WEF-Costa Rica (October 8-10, 2020).

I went to Costa Rica in mid-January to stay at Minifuno a center in the Sacred Valley created by Elinore Detiger (delighted to see her in the midst of what she does—envisioning and working behind the scene). There and later in San Jose, the capital city, I met with three circles of women who through Elinore will  be coming together to ground a Costa Rica WEF conference. Among them were corporate, professional and non-profit organization leaders. Like Iona, Costa Rica is a special place, a link between North and South America with a heritage that includes the theme of peace, a lack of a standing army, a concern for the environment.
Sophia Institute, Charleston S.C.  (March 20-21, 2020)

I love giving a workshop at The Sophia Institute in beautiful Charleston, SC. I invite you to join me to examine "Your One Wild and Precious Life: Imagination, Activism, Creativity-Soul Work.”  It's beautiful in Charleston then and we'll be in gorgeous Spring there in March.   Nature will support the work I am planning for you. Click Here for more information.
The premise of my Jungian and spiritual perspective begins with the certainty that it matters what we do with our “one wild and precious life,” a quote from the poet, Mary Oliver. Most of us have an innate sense that there is a purpose to life related to the idea that life is a soul journey. To do what we came to do and be who we were meant to be is not so easy; especially in the midst of unchosen circumstance. Vulnerability and loss are both mythic and deeply personal experiences, as is aging.  What now? Jung’s individuation, Campbell’s finding your personal myth, the hero or heroine’s journey, Persephone’s abduction into the underworld, Hecate at the crossroad, are archetypal patterns that can provide insights to support us on our journeys.  Imagination precedes change—psyche is activated by stories, role models, and dreams that touch soul. Passion and imagination precede creativity, healing, activism on behalf of ourselves and others. In being true to what deeply matters to us, we become who we were meant to be.

WOMEN’S SPIRIT: We Rise Together!
Esalen Institute - Weekend Workshop
Big Sur, CA (July 24-26, 2020
)
Women's spirit has qualities similar to fire. Fiery spirit and passion are expressed in creativity, spirituality, and sexuality, or in outrage and activism. Like fire, women's spirit can be intense and focused, can blaze up and be seen, burn out, or lie dormant covered with ash like banked coals. Women’s spirit provides the warmth and illumination in a sacred space. Or out of control, becomes destructive. With the women’s marches, the #meToo movement, and the number of women running for political office, women’s spirit became ignited.

In this workshop, open to all self-identified women, Jean will draw from the breadth and depth of her experience as a Jungian analyst--storyteller who brings archetypes and myths into real life. Participants will explore their lives as a spiral journey, and their individuation as a soul path. By recognizing where one is on their path, as it relates to current phase of life, active archetypes, significant others and the world we live in, participants will gain an affirmed sense of their unique being and purpose in the world. REINVENTING HOME essay: Activists need Blessed Solitude to Replenish:

Essay in Reinventing Home Learn that the archetype of the activist and feminist is Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and Moon. If this is you—you’ll need replenishment from Hestia the archetype and Goddess of the Hearth and Temple. Read about Artemis in Reinventing Home, a new magazine created by Valerie Andrews, which is about the relationship of home to culture, creativity, and character. My essay describes the passionate commitment of a new generation of feminists—from the rise of Greta Thunberg and other young women who are saving the world, and urges them to take time for replenishment  Click Here for the full essay.
