Dear Sangha Friend,
On the cusp of our Fall Ango training period, we're looking forward to what's ahead while savoring the last moments of summer. You can find all the ango activities and a welcome letter from the Training Office on the ango page of our website. The first Fusatsu (atonement and renewal of vows) ceremony of the ango will take place at the Monastery on Thursday, September 7, at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend.
Meanwhile, the renovation of our kitchen proceeds at full pace. The project is due to be completed in early October but keep an eye on our Sangha News blog for regular updates and photos. In addition to renovation work, the photo gallery shows the creative ways we're finding to make food prep and cleanup a joyful and efficient activity, even without our old work space.  Donations towards the project are greatly appreciated.
Also of note, Shugen Sensei will be co-leading a retreat September 8-10 at the Garrison Institute alongside Insight Meditation teacher Sylvia Boorstein and Tibetan teacher Pema Khandro Rinpoche. The program is being presented by Lion's Roar and its full title is Boundless Love: How to Generate Compassion for Yourself and Others. Garrison is located halfway between New York City and ZMM. Visit their website to read more about the program and its vital theme.
Looking ahead
While the Monastery has no shortage of meditation intensives scheduled for the ango, we're also looking forward to the weekend of October 13-15 when dharma holder Zuisei Goddard will lead a retreat entitled The Four Foundations of Mindfulness: Working with Body, Mind, Thoughts and Feelings. We'll look at the Satipatthana Sutta, one of the Buddha's earliest and most central teachings on how to examine and work skillfully with our human experience in all its complexity. Find out more on the program page.
