There's a lot happening this fall at the Monastery. The Fall 2018 Ango training period provides numerous entry points for gathering with sangha and inspiration for intensifying your home practice. Both the Monastery and Fire Lotus Temple will be holding Buddhist studies sessions, fusatsu ceremonies, dharma encounters and other programs that take up the theme of Buddha Ancestors. Dates for September are posted below.
The ango officially starts off on Sunday, September 2nd with an entering ceremony for those formally participating in the three-month practice period. All are welcome to join us for this and the full morning program and the traditional hike up Tremper Mountain lead by our Chief Disciple, Kerstin Seishin Maile. Ango registration will be open through August 28th and may be completed online or by mail. You may also consider signing up for the Peaceful Dwelling Meditation Intensive that leads up to the ango opening, August 30th - September 2nd.
Also in September, the Monastery is delighted to be hosting the 2018 Soto Zen Buddhist Association Conference, Interconnecting: One Soto Zen, Many Expressions. This is the 8th biennial meeting for the group, a professional organization of recognized Soto Zen priests. The conference will begin on September 19th and concludes Sunday morning, September 23rd. Ann Gleig, Associate Professor of Religion and Cultural Studies at the University of Central Florida will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Her articles on The Shifting Landscape of Buddhism in America and The Dukkha of Racism highlight the need for racial justice across Buddhist lineages and are available online.
Ango is a time to gather together and practice with the Sangha. So, whether you come for sesshin, a weekend retreat, a few days to several weeks of residency, or a Sunday Morning Program, we hope to see you on the mountain this fall.
With gratitude,
Christine Fowle
Programs Coordinator
