MDA Guest - IDF's Colonel (Ret.) Gili Shenhar
Col (Ret.) Gili Shenhar was our guest speaker on Thursday 27th September speaking about his experience in disaster relief and humanitarian aid.
 
Over 100 people were in attendance to listen to Gili’s first-hand experience assisting the people of Mexico when a devastating earthquake struck in 2017.
 
Gili Shenhar, a retired Colonel from Israel Defence Force (IDF) served in active duty from 1976 to 2003.
IDF/MDA Mexico Earthquake Rescue Mission.
He was a Senior Advisor to the Commander of the IDF Home Front Command and leader of Doctrine and Development, where he took part in preparing the Israeli population and relevant organisations for the potential consequences of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the 2006 conflict he was called back to assist the Home Front Command with planning and executing Risk Communication and other activities for the civil population. During the 2009, 2012 and 2014 conflicts in the South (Cast Lead & Pillow of Defence & Protective Edge), Gili was recalled as a senior spokesperson for the HFC. Shenhar has been a part of several delegations to disaster area with the IDF (include to Haiti in 2010 & to Nepal in 2015 & to Mexico in 2017) and as a part of UNDAC missions. 
 
The Hon. David Southwick MP also addressed the audience and presented 16 paramedic students from Victoria University with certificates for their recent visit to Israel. They trained with Magen David Adom for 3 weeks and received invaluable experience. Magen David Adom Australia would like to thank David for his on-going support for MDA.

Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AC OBE officiated the event, we were honoured to have him present. Professor Rosenfeld is the Director of the Monash Institute of Medical Engineering and Senior Neurosurgeon at the Alfred Hospital. His research interests currently focus on improving the outcome from traumatic brain injury and restoring sight to blind individuals with a wireless electrode interface with the brain. He is an adjunct Professor of the Department of Surgery, the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland, USA; 
Honorary Professor of Surgery at University of Papua New Guinea; and Adjunct Professor of Surgery, Chinese university of Hong Kong. He is a Major General in the Australian Defence Force and a former Surgeon General.  He has served on 8 Australian Defence Force deployments including Rwanda, East Timor, Bougainville, Solomon Islands and Iraq.  He has also been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the United States Government.  He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Australian Academy Technological Sciences and Engineering.  He was recently awarded the International Lifetime Recognition Award of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Yom Kippur - MDA on High Alert
During Yom Kippur, MDA teams were in the highest level of alert. The stations were reinforced by volunteers, deploying ambulances and Medi-Cycles in the communities and neighbourhoods, activating First Responders in synagogues and next to the Western Wall.
MDA teams responded to 2,243 calls. 268 people fainted. MDA teams treated 228 children and adults Injured riding bicycles, rollerblades and skateboards. There were 25 car accidents victims of which one was moderately injured. 26 people were injured from violence. MDA teams treated & evacuated to hospital 174 women in labour, taking part in the delivery of 7 new babies. During the day, MDA Blood Services supplied 93 blood units to the hospitals.

MDA Director-General Eli Bin, MDA Yarkon Region Director Dori Haim and his deputy Avichai Hadad were hosted by Rabbi Eli Zalman Grossman, Chief Rabbi of the city of Elad. During the visit the MDA Director-General spoke with the Rabbi about the activities of MDA in the Elad region and praised the many volunteers from the ultra-Orthodox sector who live in the city and save lives every day and thanked him for the hospitality.
 
The Rabbi thanked MDA Director-General for the important and dedicated activity in order to save lives.
