Why was a DLR Falcon following an Airbus A321XLR so closely?

Airbus and the German Aerospace Centre flew the two aircraft within 100 meters of each other, on purpose. The DLR plane is equipped with special sensors to measure emissions from the A321XLR’s engines as it runs on 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
