Business Spotlight β Grass Cattle Company
Grass Cattle Company is rooted in a simple idea, but owner Steve Schubart takes it seriously every day: "There's a better way to raise beef and a better way to connect people with the farms producing their food."
From that starting point, he built a business in Charlotte that reflects care for the land and the customer. The farm's cattle spend their lives on pasture, and the farm uses rotational grazing rather than a feedlot system. Schubart said the goal is to "build soil, improve our pastures, and raise cattle in a way that works with the landscape instead of against it."
That philosophy carries through the whole operation. The land is managed without herbicides and pesticides, and the work is guided by a long view. One of the most distinctive parts of Grass Cattle Company is its use of digital tools to make farming more visible.
Schubart noted, "There is a pretty big disconnect today between agriculture and the people eating the food." He sees part of his role as closing that gap through social media. Grass Cattle Company now does much of its work direct-to-consumer, which means customer communication and online systems are part of the daily routine.
Fast, dependable internet from WCVT has made all this possible and supports a self-serve beef stand that is open daily. The farm store is built around Wi-Fi-enabled technology, allowing customers to come in, shop, and check themselves out without the store needing to be staffed all day.

Keeping Americans Connected with Broadband Built to Last
For more than a century, the goal of ensuring that every American has access to reliable communications services at a reasonable cost has guided national policy. Today, that mission continues through the federal Universal Service Fund (USF), a vital program that helps rural communities like ours remain connected.
At Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom, we're proud to participate in the USF program, which helps deliver high-quality, affordable broadband to homes and businesses across Vermont. This support is especially critical for low-income families, schools, libraries, and healthcare facilities in our region, ensuring that everyone has the tools needed to thrive in todayβs digital world.
Whether you're streaming a class, attending a telehealth appointment, or running a small business from home, USF helps make those connections possible β right here in Vermont.
