LeadingAge California Statement on Proposed Federal Medicaid Cuts
LeadingAge California stands with older adults, families, and providers across our state in expressing deep concern regarding the proposed Medicaid budget reconciliation legislation currently under consideration in Congress. The proposal under debate includes over $900 billion in reductions to federal Medicaid funding, which would leave 8.6 million Americans without health insurance. This is particularly troubling for our most vulnerable populations, including older adults who rely on Medicaid for long-term services and supports in nursing homes, assisted living communities, and at home.

Such cuts would force states like California to make impossible choices: raise taxes, reduce covered populations or services, or cut spending in other critical programs. The result would be severe limitations on older adults’ access to care and would threaten the ability of nonprofit, mission-driven providers to deliver that care, reducing the sustainability and viability of nursing homes, hospitals, and safety-net providers, especially in rural and underserved communities.

We urge Congress to reject any budget reconciliation proposals that would reduce Medicaid coverage and put older adults at risk. Balancing the federal budget must not come at the expense of those who depend on these benefits for their health and economic security.
