There is a unique electricity in a race, but as we learned during a recent run, the experience is shaped entirely by the voices we choose to hear.
Barely 500 meters from the start, a colleague was met with a jarring comment from a stranger: "Hey, this is not a jogging session, you know!" In an instant, her excitement evaporated. It was a reminder of how quickly a negative word can heavy the feet of even the most eager runner.
But the finish line told a different story. As we headed back to the car, a group of seasoned runners asked if we’d done the 21km. When we humbly replied, "Oh no, only 10km," they stopped us. "It’s not ‘just’ 10km," they cheered. "It IS 10km! You did it while others were still sleeping! Good job!" That warmth turned our exhaustion into pure pride.
